As many of you may have heard by now, Steve Reeves, our President of COPE Local 131, has retired from his active role as a YP representative. But before I go on, I would like to make it clear (as many of you have asked!!) that Steve will remain on in his role as President of the Union for the foreseeable future.
Steve started his with YP in 1989 in the Advantage channel, and after several years was promoted to the Premise sales channel where he was awarded as a Member of the President’s Gold Circle, and where he remained for the rest of his 28 year career.
Steve started his work with our Union in 1992 as a back-up steward for the Advantage “West” group with OPEIU (the predecessor to COPE). In 1995 he became part of the bargaining and labour relations committee and has been involved in negotiating each of our agreements since that time. He was elected to the position of Deputy Chief steward in 1999, and helped negotiate the very challenging move to home-based premise reps in 2000.
In 2001 he was elected Chief Steward and in 2004 was elected to the position of President Local 131, and has remained in that position since that time.
Without a doubt, there has been no other single individual in our organization that has had a more lasting and profound impact on the success and longevity of our Union than Steve Reeves.
On behalf of all of the members of COPE Local 131 (past and present),
I want to wish Steve all the best in a well deserved retirement from active YP duties and thank him for his longstanding dedication and advocacy on behalf of all of our members.
Rick Miller VP & Director of Operations
As many of you are aware, there have been ongoing discussions between our Union and YP management throughout 2015 about the Retention Group. From it’s original inception, as a trial project in Advantage Sales, your Union has supported the goals, work, and people involved in this endeavour. We are pleased to announce that as of Jan 14, 2016 the members of the Retention Group are now part of COPE Local 131.
We would like to thank all those individuals involved in the discussions and negotiations, both from our local, and from YP management. We firmly believe that an effective Retention strategy is a key component to the future success of the organization and of our membership.
Please join me, along with our Union Council, in welcoming the members of the Retention Group to COPE Local 131!
To the inside sales groups of YP,
Come out and join your COPE representatives for an hour of questions, answers, general discussion, and definitely pizza. Steve Reeves, president of Local 131 and Rick Miller VP & Director of Ops will be there.

It is with much shock and sadness that we pass along the news that we lost a great friend and colleague, Greg Tufts, this past weekend.
Greg worked for many years in our Advantage sales department, and also volunteered his time and efforts as a steward in our union local, representing our membership.
For those of you who were lucky enough to know Greg, you know he was a consummate professional who always had time to help and advocate for his co-workers. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his family. He will be truly missed.
There is a FB page set up for friends of Greg to share information, including times and location for visitation and funeral services: Facebook Page for Greg Tufts
For those of you who would like to make a donation to Greg’s memorial fund, the link to the information is here: Greg Tufts Memorial Fund
Just this past week, representatives from COPE Local 131 met with Union leadership from IBEW local 2228, and COPE locals 378 and 574 as part of our ongoing National Joint Unions Council representing YPG sales employees. The meetings were held in Calgary and graciously organized by our colleagues from IBEW who represent Yellow Pages employees in Alberta. Our thanks to them for hosting and organizing the meetings, as it can be quite challenging trying to coordinate with everyone across the country.
The council continued it’s commitment to review and discuss issues of common interest to our membership, and discussed strategies and concerns regarding upcoming collective bargaining which will involve all our our membership across the country over the next 12-18 months.
Your unions as always are committed to co-operating through the council to achieve fair and reasonable collective agreements for all our YP members.

With the recent announcement of increased acquisition targets in the premise sales channel, many of our members have asked for a clarification on the Union’s position on these initiatives. Please follow this link for more information regarding our position on acquisition duties in both the Premise and Advantage channels.
